Annual Car Show great success!
By: Maureen Manzano and Bill O’Neill
Hundreds of car aficionados, families and craft enthusiasts descended upon The Scranton School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children on what became a sunny Sunday for the 9th Annual Car Show on May 6.
Sponsored by Pocono Mountain Street Rods, this year was the first year the school hosted the event at its new home in South Abington Township. A record 127 show cars participated, according to Business Manager William O’Neill. Mr. Brucher’s, Red Anglia won Best in Show.
Proceeds from the Car Show will help fund construction of the school’s new handicapped-accessible playground.
Staff, school families and volunteers were also on hand to enjoy the day, which included the school’s food tent, filled with the smells of hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken spiedies and sausage and peppers. This year’s basket raffle broke another record as it featured more than 50 baskets, donated by local businesses, staff and friends of the school. A 50-50 Raffle also attracted much interest.
For the first year, the school’s Parent Staff Organization challenged the school staff to a contest to see which entry garnered the most tickets. PSO donated a wading pool filled with a variety of children’s water and outdoor toys, but it was the staff’s money and lottery tickets that drew the most interest from patrons. The staff, at least for this year, won the trophy and bragging rights.
Also new this year was the Craft Fair which attracted 23 vendors and offered items ranging from handmade soaps to colorful duct tape purses to chainsaw wood carvings. Kevin Treat, husband of teacher Linda Treat, donated his wood carving of a sports car driven by two bears, amazing onlookers as he carved it during the show. The piece was then raffled off in a separate raffle to benefit the school’s new playground.
Visitors to the show were impressed not only by the cars but also by the school’s campus and everyone looks forward to next year’s event.
