A PROGRAM OF THE WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF - PITTSBURGH
Middle School

The Middle School includes students in grades 5-8. Children of middle school ages undergo rapid developmental changes that present unique educational needs.

These changes affect cognitive development, physical growth, social awareness and moral/ethical development. Through understanding the nature of these changes, educational programming is designed to best promote student academic success and healthy self-identity.
The Middle School is made of a community of students, educators and parents with a shared educational philosophy that focuses on the unique needs of the age group it serves. Students attend common classes in learning groups and have the opportunity to explore elective classes for the first time.

Teachers regularly meet in teams of varying subject areas to discuss curriculum and student needs. Emphasis is placed on all students succeeding through teamwork. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in the education of their child through participating in school events, supporting educators and understanding the unique needs their child will encounter at this age.
